At Jacobs, STEAM and sustainability are at the heart of our business and we are united in developing and delivering a global STEAM education and engagement program that demonstrates our commitment to equality, inclusion and diversity.
To us, STEAM encompasses our core values and aligns with TogetherBeyond and Jacobs’ Action Plan for Advancing Justice and Equality, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, our Jacobs Employee Networks and our Collectively strategic causes.
Jacobs has chosen to use “STEAM” rather than “STEM” for several reasons:
- STEAM highlights a broader and more inclusive range of interests and topics in addition to science, technology, engineering and math.
- It provides a greater opportunity for our employees to see themselves in STEAM.

Our approach to STEAM streamlines and amplifies the social value that we create in the communities where we live and work – this means that we share our STEAM resources with anyone who wants or needs them.
By uniting and growing our global STEAM efforts to create an inclusive STEAM education and engagement program we hope to engage employees and students around the world. And our STEAM program will help Jacobs identify and secure a diverse talent pipeline for the future, contributing to our 40-40-20 goal by 2025 (40% women, 40% men, 20% any gender).
“In order to create a long-term and sustainable behavioral shift toward climate change, we must engage, educate and embed those traits early in our future generations, so they are inspired to do things better. At Jacobs, STEAM and sustainability are at the heart of our business – we are united in growing our global approach to STEAM to create inclusive education opportunities and support greater social value, inclusion, diversity and equality.”

STEAM Education: Future-Proofing Our Youth
The ever-increasing pace and impact of technological change has been the subject of fascination for investors, educators, entrepreneurs, and pundits of varying stripes at least as far back as 1965, when Gordon Moore first postulated his now-famous law. As emerging technology continues to build upon itself, the trajectory of change is likely to continue accelerating, and tomorrow’s workforce needs to get a handle now on the critical technical disciplines necessary to thrive in the future. On this episode of If/When, we explored the topic of STEAM education – what it is, why it’s important and how to get more of today’s students involved in it – with three STEAM education advocates from Jacobs: Kara Connon, STEAM Lead for Europe; Lainie Harber, Communications Project Manager; and Samuel Stanford, Structural Engineer, Jacobs Electronics Team.

“Like Jacobs, STEM Learning is driven by ensuring every young person has access to a great broad and balanced education, including all the elements of STEAM. We know this starts with supporting teachers – ensuring they have the subject-specific training and assistance they need. It also means inspiring and motivating young people – through engagement with role models such as STEM Ambassadors. We are indebted to the whole team at Jacobs for the support they give to us, young people, teachers and schools.”
