Through her work on large wastewater programs, Jennifer has focused her career on coastal, pumped systems. Having grown up in flat Indiana, she understands the challenges of moving water with little change in grade. She is fascinated by the pumped wastewater systems that coastal communities have used to solve this issue.
Jennifer believes that mentoring is key to anyone’s career in STEAM. Her first mentor was her uncle, who was an agricultural engineer who worked on the first Cub Cadet lawn tractor. Uncle Harold encouraged Jennifer to become an engineer, and she is grateful for that encouragement! He also taught her important career lessons, including how to network. Having benefited from the advice of many mentors throughout her career, Jennifer is now passionate about mentoring the next generation. In 2009, she won the Mentor of the Year award for a company that Jacobs later acquired.
“Positive mental health and resilience to change are necessary to be an effective leader. You will have days where nothing goes right, and you have to be ready to shake those off and look ahead to better days.”
In her next “career,” Jennifer plans to focus on giving back to her community, focusing on food insecurity and STEAM education. Now living in Maryville, Tennessee, at the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, she currently assists with “St. Joseph’s Treasures” at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, which connects parishioners with excess to those in need. It’s a fulfilling aspect of Jennifer’s life that she plans to continue once she retires from engineering. When she isn’t volunteering, she and her husband, Brett, enjoy hiking (not just in the Smokies) and traveling as much as possible!
Jennifer received her bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and Ph.D. in Civil (Environmental) Engineering, both from Purdue University. Boiler up!
